My Alta II jacket does not seem to be as breatheable as usual. I've contacted Nikwax (they make the wash and proof that I regularly use) and they think it might have been over-proofed. Their tip is to dry clean. I've not done this to a waterproof before and before I take the plunge does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations?

In reply to Karl Lunt:

The Paramo web site recommends dry cleaning for stubborn stains, so I guess it should be OK!

In reply to Mark Bull: Thanks for that, Mark.

In reply to Karl Lunt: Try washing it in normal detergent, which is better than soap at getting rid of dirt and oils, wash again in Techwash or pure soap to get rid of the detergent, rinse well, then reproof. Done it the odd time with my VAL smock and it really does make a positive difference.
In reply to Mark Bull:

Old discussion on OM that is relevant. Look for the post by Jane Firth, product development chemist at Nikwax

Dry cleaning will strip off all of the old proofing, giving you a nice clean starting point for a re-proof.

In reply to captain paranoia: thanks again, folks - dry cleaning seems to be OK. I tried washing a waterproof in detergent once and it ruined it (seemed as waterproof as a string vest and tarnished the metal studs!).
