More kudos for the ratio of roughness of the town to beauty of the song.

I'll start with Neil Young - Helpless youtube.com/watch?v=qOv9nwuC67Y&

But for beauty vs roughness this must near the top of the list - an ode to Scunthorpe no less:

Iris Dement

bit predictable, but essential homage to Bradford/ Keithley etc

and Down by the Jetty is pretty much a love song to Canvey Island...sort of

Was that a rule? In any case, I think "My home town" by Bruce is probably about Bruce's home town.

In da pub - 50 pence.

Essentially a rip off/spoof song, but there's some great Hemel Hempstead sights mentioned.

I adore Iris and this song, and this rendition of it - was glad to see you'd posted this particular clip.
She is doing a couple of shows in Dublin and Londonderry later this year, if at all possible you should go, she rarely crosses the Atlantic. I saw her in Dublin in 2008, it was awesome (and yes she played this and "My Life"). Logistics working out expensive this time though. She brought out a new album last October, I just got it on Saturday, it's a little bit "Iris by numbers" to be honest.

In reply to Blue Straggler: I originally knew the song from the Kate Rusby version - pleasant enough, but like a lot of KR's work, a bit soulless. I heard the original later, and though it took a listen or two to get round her voice, it's much more....something ( I've deleted a couple of adjectives 'cos I wasn't entirely sure what I was saying real? heartfelt? better?)

In the newly annexed parts of the peoples republic of Salford (the bits that were properly Lancashire), we were forced to learn this by heart at School

(a) a very poor attempt at cultural hegemony

(b) the quickest way to kill a song for kids is to have them sing it in assembly. cf all the trendy teachers who got kids to sing Happy Christmas (war is over) at Christmas

It is difficult to describe Iris without sounding patronising or pejorative, I know!

Earnest, honest, heartfelt (regarding both the vocals and the lyrics) always sounds like some awful sub-Bob-Harris music press cliché yet I can't think of anything else. It's not "raw" or (God forbid) "earthy".
Does her voice take that much getting used to? I first heard her singing live on the Andy Kershaw R1 show about 20 years ago and it was the first time I ever liked "country" music - a bit of a turning point for me really...and I managed to tape one song
Mama's Opry, with bonus Kershaw at the end

Flame trees, by Cold Chisel. Written about Grafton, NSW Australia, but resonates with me because I left my 'home town' when I was 15, and I identify with that vague sense of displacement and nostalgia every time i go back.

He does a scarier one that's for sure!
Only watched it for the first time very recently, and as it happens, Iris' rendition is the first one I'd heard and was one of the better tracks on the Lifeline album so I still kind of associate the song with her even though it's an old one. Made Night of the Hunter even weirder for me

If you've only just seen "Night of the Hunter" you wouldn't really have appreciated Radio Raheem's version of the fight between good and evil in "Do the Right Thing", (assuming you've seen the latter).

I saw the latter just once, about 20 years ago. I don't remember the details but at that time I would have been aware of Mitchum's knuckle tattoos and possibly even that whole scene. Empire magazine back then was regularly bought by me and often had "classic scenes" in the back. That said, I don't remember much about Do The Right Thing and I must watch it again soon. What's Spike Lee been up to for the last ten years anyway? The 25th Hour was a great film...

Moving back closer to the OP, Ed Norton's rant about New York in 25th Hour is an absolute masterpiece and much more entertaining than any song about the said city.

Cater USM - Twenty four minutes from Tulse Hill.

Midnight on the murder mile.

Both sitting towards the rougher end of the scale but the murder mile has a certain beauty, clouded by a childhood spent walking around Norwood and Tulse Hill.
