My partner has asked me what I want for Christmas?

I really don't know! I've got everything I need in terms of climbing gear and clothing.

Wine is always nice, but she says that's not very original, particularly as I'll share it with her!

Any suggestions?

I like reading so books are always welcome. Has anyone read any outstanding climbing/mountaineering books recently? I got "Fiva" and "Into the Silence" last year.

Any other suggestions?

My other interests include books on the Great War and Second World War, so I'm always keen to hear of good reads recently published? Not fiction.

Have you read Wade Davis's 'Into the Silence'. It's about the Great War, Mallory and the 1920s Everest expeditions. It's very good.

and on a related note, there's also Graham Hoyland's 'Last Hours on Everest'. Graham Hoyland's great uncle was Howard Somervell who climbed in the 1920s expeditions, and whose camera was borrowed by Mallory on his final summit attempt. It's also very good.

I don't know if he has read it, but I do know that he got it for Christmas last year

There's a new biography of W H Murray 'The Sunlit Summit', recently published. I bought a copy last week at a Doug Scott/Paul Braithwaite talk in Birnam, but I haven't started reading it yet.

If you order it from Glacier Books, you can get a copy signed by the author.
