I am going to switzerland at the end of next week (18/01) with work, and am taking an extra week to go climbing or skiing. I am flying to Zurich but thinking of heading over into austria, italy or staying in switzerland.
Does anyone have any recommendation for good destination for ice climbing, and does anyone know what the conditions are like at the moment?

You might be best to stay in Switzerland for ice climbing. Over in the eastern Italian Alps it is very mild, almost spring-like, at the moment.

Conditions seem to be worse than normal at the moment in Austria and Switzerland. See report below, in German, from Kandersteg:

The author of this report commented that he didn't take any more pictures, as it would have brought tears to his eyes...

I am sure there are some routes possible in some places though.

For skiing (touring), best to head to somewhere like Andermatt, or south of there for good snow.
