Hey there gang.
Is there much in the way of bouldering in Cornwall? If so what and where? oh and which guidebook covers it?

I have a tendency towards preferring to know what the problem is and what grade it is and things. Will be staying near Bosigran for info.

Hey,

Boulder Britain has got a section on Cornwall, and if you can get your hands on this months Climb magazine, then there is a whole article on bouldering in Devon and Cornwall!

Hope this helps!

Godrevy is not too far- if you google godrevy bouldering there is a great PDF. Clodgy nearer bosi has some great stuff. Javu.co.uk has the details I think. Sennen is also ok at the base. Watch out for tides and big waves at all these locations... Godrevy is good 2 hours either side of low. Have fun!

The obvious Place near Bosigran is Carn Galver, which gives good but limited granite bouldering on the right hand side of hill on the other side of the road from Bosigran. Some details on UKC. Down the road near St Ives, there's hundreds of recorded problems at Clodgy, here: http://www.javu.co.uk/Climbing/Guides/Stives/BoulderingInStIves2007.pdf

There is lots of info on Dave Henderson's Javu website http://www.javu.co.uk/Climbing/Guides/index.shtml in particular, there is a southern culm bouldering PDF by Dave Westlake. There is also a Hartland area guide and loads of info on Dartmoor bouldering (both in Devon though). There is also quite a bit on Bodmin Moor - details in the Cheeswring and South East Cornwall guide - http://www.stivesworldwide.co.uk/product.php?id_product=45

BTW I notice the "Bump" thread has died, did you win?

Not sure, I think I did. Last time I looked I was the last to post.
In reply to puppythedog:

Tom's involved with writing the new guide, so he knows what's what (and more importantly, what it's all called).

I never know which one is called Carn Galver, but if it's the one directly behind Zennor village, that's the one. Definitely the best bouldering in Cornwall (unless you're a Clodgy head, or a Godrevy devotee, or a Carn Brea fan).

Barnaby Carver has done some sterling work at Clodgy, and the topo is easily found. If you like your problems signposted, that might be the spot for you.

Carn Galver is the obvious "tor" above the NT mine buildings next to the CC Count House. The best bouldering is actually on some outcrops down down and right of the summit, probably more easily reached from the bridle path up the valley from the Rosemergy cattle grid. Aire Point near Gwynver beach (Sennen) has excellent bouldering, some of it reasonably highball. Another good spot is Gurnard's Head (greenstone) and the cove to its North. Masses of problems but you'll have to explore for yourself as none have been recorded to my knowledge. Same is true of the upper outcrops of Carn Gloose S of Gurnard's Head.
In reply to Iain Peters:

Ah, so the bit I've always called Zennor Hill is probably Zennor Hill. I've explored what's obviously called Carn Galver, and I've got to be honest, it's way better on Zennor.

I'd probably not bother with the upper outcrops of Carn Gloose

Martin

Ps quite right about Gwynver, and there is a tool about - but as you say, some of it's a bit huggable, and a lot of landings are sketchy.

In reply to maisie:

The best outcrop near Zennor is actually in the garden of Tregerthen. A W Andrews who owned it back in the early years of the 20th C used to entertain his house guests on it, including the likes of Mallory and Winthrop Young, before initiating them into the dark arts of DWS or as he called it sea-traversing.

Clodgy is the best bet.

Esoteric and good is Boswarlas http://ia600406.us.archive.org/17/items/Boswalis_pdf/boswalis.pdf

Carn Galver arete is very good, especially the sitter

Zennor has very good but small problems
