Here they are at it again, trailing everyone else ever way way back in their wake...

I particularly love the moment, about a minute in, where the Loon loses a drum-stick

I think you might mean "leaving..." rather than "trailing..."

The people in the wake are those trailing.
Tim Chappell 18 Jul 2014
In reply to Blue Straggler:

Compare and contrast: trail v.tr. and trail v.intr.
 Blue Straggler 18 Jul 2014
In reply to Tim Chappell:

I knew that. It still doesn't really work in the context you've used it, as The Who were not actively choosing to trail anyone behind them.

I am correct.

Who's going to be the first c*nt to put a rick astley link on here?

Beautiful. Never tire of hearing this.

In reply to ThunderCat:

Before I followed Tim's link, I'd assumed this was the track he'd be linking to.

Heresy alert....

I prefer the version on No Quarter

sorry an' all that.

Yep, they certainly don't make them like that any more!

Did someone steal your sweeties? You recently seem to have been more picky and moany than usual.

In reply to Tim Chappell:

No, just don't get The Who. Even the Stones are better and they're not that good.

In reply to ThunderCat:

Great tune but Plant's intro made me wince. What a d1ck.

Superb.

The Stooges. After their 1st three records it's a wonder anyone else bothers trying.

Iron Maiden would get my vote.
Massive act, but the lead singer is still driving the tour bus!

Queen are probably the greatest.

And I would certainly go along with that.

The list of brilliant tracks /songs is long.

The aforementioned bands mentioned certainly had some epic tracks ,but they don't come close to Queens success.

Led Zeppelin- I can only think of Stairway to Heaven (the rest is just technically proficient noise)

Stooges- can only think of IDWTBADog (don't think I'd want to hear the rest)

Queen?
That's 'Disco'.

since when has commercial success been a quality indicator? if Queen were starting out today they would just be one another one of mr Cowells cash cows....

Right then...

Put these in the crack pipe and smoke it. The New York Dolls (1973)

youtube.com/watch?v=kL6zaPy6kdI&

Difficult to categorise, but they could sure knock out some R'n'R.

In reply to Blue Straggler:

So you can't trail anything unless you actively choose to?

So my car can't trail tin cans behind it unless I put them there?

I think you'll find you are not correct.
 Blue Straggler 19 Jul 2014
In reply to Tim Chappell:
> I think you'll find you are not correct.

We are BOTH correct!

Thanks for the lesson and example. I had not thought of it that way. Fair enough.

I'll probably start overusing it in that sense now....and it'll be your fault! :-P

Motorhead are simply unbeatable recorded but especially live. They play proper rock'n'roll as well.

Bloody hell, I haven't heard any MC5 beyond Kick Out The Jams but that sounds like proper rock'n'roll to me.

I think you mean NIWBYDog If you like rock'n'roll you should hear the rest. Forget the stories about drugs self abuse etc. The 2nd and 3rd albums are amazing, loud dirty raucous blasts of r'n'r power. Raw Power indeed. Also surprisingly melodic with decent lyrics and great musicianship. James Williamson is an underrated guitarist, great riff's, excellent economical soloing.

Of course the right answer is Led Zeppelin and here is an example of a song containing more musical ideas than some bands had in a whole career. Pretty energetic too and then there's John Bonham ... youtube.com/watch?v=YWOuzYvksRw&

The Who are great, and that clip shows Daltry at his best, I think. But just listen to Richard Thompson doing Substitute:

youtube.com/watch?v=4MeB_rP-Xgg&

Isn't he/it great?

I don't really get most of Queen, let alone Led Zep, but Freddie and the band and Hammer to Fall at Live Aid '85 are superb:

What a front man!

But, for greatest rock and roll band of all time, this lot get my vote, even when they do covers:

youtube.com/watch?v=FKIzjF25sP8&

A journalist said it, but when the front three all approach the mikes at once at the start, it makes your hairs stand up and is one of the most visceral moments of rock performance that I know.

On the other hand, so is this

youtube.com/watch?v=tcK0HcovzTA&

That's 56 years ago. What if you happened on that now, on the street, wouldn't that be terrific?
