Hi guys,

I'm really sorry if this is the complete wrong place to post this.. but I just need a little advice.

I'm taking my 2 year old Son to Cornwall in a week and I really want to take him along the cliff walks and down into some of the valleys where I went as a child.

The only problem is that I am incredibly paranoid about the sheer drops and stuff, no safety railings etc. Although I obviously didn't run off the edge when I was a kid.. it's different now that I have my own!

Essentially what I was thinking was just to have a lanyard between us just to put my mind at rest. I don't want any of those poncy flimsy wrist straps that you can get from mothercare. I want something that comes with a SWL :p

I was thinking maybe just a 1m length of rope with karabinas on each end and then I could just have a loop around my beltline and he could have some kind of simple harness?

Any advice on this/ideas/links to buy stuff would be very much appreciated.

Also feel free to bash me on my paranoia and tell me not to coddle my child and stuff :p

Thanks guys!

IMO you are absolutely not paranoid or coddling. Tether him and watch him like a hawk - I bet it won't spoil the day. 2 year olds cannot easily assess dangers like those.

Hope you have fun!

quick bit of googling, obviously not UIAA spec but something along these lines would presumably do the job for a bit of walking?

I remember being on reins/harness when I was a kid until much later than 2 (otherwise I wouldn't remember it!) although that was for use around roads rather than cliffs.

PPS further googling suggests better things are available (for a price) but I should probably do some work!

We had one of those harnesses you buy toddlers. They more than hold the kids weight and when they are on easy ground, you can tuck the handle into the harness and let them go.

Mine were kind of resistant to reins, but would tolerate a rucsac with harness

Otherwise, you're probably looking at a full body harness - the Rock Empire one went small enough for mine at 2 (the younger one wanted to wear one at that age, so he was dressed up like his big brother.....), but likely overkill unless you're considering particularly extreme paths!
