Hi guys,

I'm a Product design student in Nottingham and as part of a final year project I'm doing some research about amputee/ disabled climbers and the prosthetics that they use.

There are some fantastic case studies with people like Kev Shields, and Hugh Herr - but I'd like to talk to UK climbers who use prosthetics to climb, so I can begin to understand their climbing world.

I'm based in Nottingham but can probably get around most of the UK (Or if any of you are headed to the peak district anytime soon, let me know!) I'd love to get in touch and discuss if you're willing to.

Any climbers contributing may choose whether to enter my research anonymously, or as a profiled user.

Hopefully, this project would evolve to allow me to start designing a new generation prosthetic specifically for Amputee/ disabled climbers!

My Email address is andrewjamescherry@gmail.com, or you can just comment on this forum.

Thanks for any contributions!

Did you know that the IFSC Paraclimbing Cup takes place this weekend in Sheffield?
In reply to AndrewJamesCherry:

@astley007 Just checking out his Bio - Looks like a man to talk to indeed. Actually going to the climbing injury symposium and meeting climbers there may be a fantastic start? But at £120 thats about half my research fund :/ (student climber). That and the fact that I would only really be around for a couple of hours to talk to people rather than taking part in workshops etc...
Do you know if there is any way of paying for just one day? Or turning up without booking just to talk to people? Perhaps I'll email them.

@Winhill - Damn no I didn't! I'm in Sheffield this weekend and all. Thanks for the ace headsup!

Norman Croucher who lives in the west country has been in the news recently. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-29307830. You could probably contact him via the beeeb or his website. http://www.normancroucher.co.uk

There was a disabled climbing comp on in Scotland a few weeks ago, maybe you can find people through MCOFS

People may climb with a prosthesis, they have a prosthetic limb, if you are going to study the field please get the terminology right.
In reply to AndrewJamesCherry:

@Andrew Lodge - Cheers for the heads up, so prosthesis would be the plural term? Or just the none specific term.

I may have failed to mention I know nothing about prosthetic limbs, disability climbing etc - this is a field totally new to me so sorry if I get a couple of things wrong or seem offensive! To be honest, I wasn't even sure if 'amputee' was the correct term!

Thanks for all the help guys

One of our students from a few years back designed robotic hand as a final year project and then took it further after he left. Have a look at the open hand project and this video which is from a few year back.
