Found some of my late father's axes while clearing out the shed. They're old school axes that have had the picks and shafts bent, hand rests added and abrasive 'emery' cloth glued to the shaft to improve the grip.

That's fascinating, thanks.

Do you reckon your dad made the modifications? If so , can you guess when? The aggressive angle of the pick on the middle axe is reminiscent of the Clog Vulture which will have appeared in the late '70s/early '80s or so - and of course came from Wales.

In reply to Rob Parsons:

Picks were bent on dad's axes in the late sixties, shafts were bent in the late 70's, I remember the shafts being boiled on a tin bath over a bomfire in the garden. The lower hand rest were added in the 80s to replace a full knuckle duster type 'D' guard which probably weighed more than the rest of the axe. He was a metal smith and big mates with Hugh Banner and Denny Moorehouse so possibly got the ideas from those dudes.
