I know this may be impossible to answer, but can anyone give me an indication of what the snow/weather conditions are likely to be in Chamonix at the start of April? I'm going to be there on a family holiday, and I was wondering what the chances are of doing some one-day trekking or even some easy alpine routes (eg Petit Verte etc). Are the lower peaks (eg Le Brevent) likely to still be snow-bound? Any info as to what sort of conditions might reasonably be expected would be helpful.

Many thanks!!

I would expect a lot of snow still, especially above 2500m. Brevent is open for skiing until a couple of weeks after easter. Grand montets tends to be open until mid-May. Unless experience with the use of ski touring gear I'd probably leave it (though not sure about trekking)

It's usually an excellent time to ski, whether downhill or touring. South facing rock may well be in good condition, even on the Midi and nearby. Good time also for classic ice routes, but maybe not on your own.
