I had a programme on a now extinct computer for HDR but I want to get into it again. My main interest is in coping with high contrast scenes rather than special effects. Do you have any recommendations for a basic HDR programme preferrable free or low cost?

Although I'm tending not to use HDR software much any more because 'Photo Ninja' RAW software can achieve similar effects if & when I want it, if I'm really wanting to want to achieve something funky with 3 or 5 widely spaced exposures, I use 'Luminance'. It's 'freeware', and easy to use ... http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtpfsgui/

Picturenaut is fairly good and easy to use. It has a couple of limitations, but the speed and ease of use make it a good first choice.

Another one you might want to try is Luminance. The UI is horrible, but it is fairly capable once you get used to it.

Neither are particularly good at dealing with ghosting, although they do both have some anti ghost features. It's often not a big deal with landscapes though.
