The 2014 Piolets d'Or prizes for alpinism have been announced prior to the main event on the 9th-12th April. Amongst the three teams to be honoured with the golden ice axe are American climbers Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold in recognition of their five-day, seven-summit traverse of the Fitz Roy massif in Patagonia last February.

They've certainly got it right with Caldwell and Honnold for this - and for Bonners for lifetime achievement - richly deserved. Being ignorant/uninformed, I don't know about the other stuff but doubtless it's eminently worthy. And the award should be for stuff that's eminently worthy, even if it's stuff that punters like me have never heard of.
