On Thursday afternoon I did the short traverse at the base of Frodsham's Hoopla Buttress as a warm-up. There was a noticeable smell of bleach on my fingers after doing this, so I guess someone had been using bleach solution to "clean" the handholds. This seems unnecessary and a bit odd, as these must be some of the consistently cleanest holds on the crag - they had been fine the previous week. There are plenty of other places on the crag where some public-spirited discreet cleaning of filthy holds (e.g. with a soft brush) could be helpful, but surely it's not needed on a low traverse with very well-used holds. Some residual dampness actually made the traverse seem a touch harder than it had been the previous week. If it was an effort to clean the chalk off the handholds, I'm sure using bleach solution isn't the best choice.
