Hip Clunking, injury advice?

I'm a long distance runner who has a problem!

I've done 3 marathons now but have hit a stumbling block with a hip injury that i can't shake off. In preparation for a marathon in March i pulled what felt like my groin with around 3 weeks to go. With a bit of tapering and careful running i managed to complete the marathon, which was great, but it came at a cost...

Straight after the marathon i was unable to lift my left leg any higher than a curbside, with a dull ache coming from the left side of my groin/hip. This has since eased off after many weeks (and now edging in to months) of rest and recovery, but it's still lingering. Around once a week it'll just "go" and then i have the pain again, albeit a less intense version of the immediate post marathon immobility. If i lie on my back and do the bicycle stretch with my legs (imaginary bike ride) then my right hip joint is a-ok, meanwhile the left is giving out a dull clunk accompanied by mild pain. This also happens with sit ups, and almost any activity that involves the left leg being extended.

Any help, advice, or similar experiences would be helpful, ta!

Sounds like the symptoms I had which turned out to be impingement. Google it to see if it sounds familiar to what you're experiencing.

And.Obviously go to your GP to get a referral to a specialist.

Don't panic.
Although it could be articular, it sounds more than possible that it's iliopsoas.
These 2 muscles flex the femur at the hip, or if the femur is fixed, flex the trunk as in a sit up. Snapping is felt in the groin with or without pain.
I had this with too much rowing.
Google some iliopsoas stretches, rest from the causative completely, massage the painful area deeply if able, see a physio in the first instance.

Read around internal and external snapping at the hip.
ITB illiotibial band syndrome + Trochanteric bursitis
FAI femoacetabular impingment

The latter is by far the most problematic/serious re the corrective procedure required.

Good luck

Thanks a lot, having looked in to iliopsoas i think you may have got it.

Will get to work on flexing it!

Less of the running. More of the stretching.
