Hi all,

New to this climbing malarkey ļ

I started weight training in the gym about a year ago and have put on a bit of weight ¡V I¡¦m now 85 kilos, up from 72 kilos. I¡¦m 6¡¦2ish (1.88m)

Do I have the potential to get a good hand power to weight ratio, or should I aim to shed some of the fat and tone up to make my climbing life easier?

Cheers guys

Getting rid of excess weight is always going to be a good way to go.

Depends how serious you are - for the first couple of years it's unlikely that weight is going to be a seriously limiting factor, but on harder routes then getting towards the sort of sub-20 BMI of the top climbers will certainly help.

I dropped some weight (maybe a bit too much) to climb harder but just ended up being weaker, found a happy medium now, athletic build works for me but I'm more of a dyno-er than a super technical climber.technique is much more important than strength but you look better when you fall off if your ripped.

if you are going to do routes being light is a massive advantage.
