I tend to agree that RAC is a bit of a trek away (about an hour probably). The bouldering around Trawsfynydd is not far at all and beautifully situated by the lake. If you go a bit further there is loads around Blaenau and especially up behind Tan-y-Grisiau above and below the Stwlan Dam road. There is a nice site that has a guide to the area here:
