Having never met or seen Omar Sharif, I'll use this as an excuse to trot out my old Peter O'Toole story instead. Some years ago I was taking money from an atm in Edinburgh's new town when I heard a dreadful coughing behind me. I turned round and there was Peter O'Toole, coughing his lungs out as he walked by. Our eyes met and he said, "Soon be dead, thank God."

I've got his autograph from when he was making a film ("The Last Valley") locally in the late 60s. Had to wait around hours to see him stumble through a "bog".
