The picture of Andy Kirkpatrick after his epic ascent of Sea of Dreams on El Cap made me think of others pictures that show people who have been 'To Hell & Back'. Here is one that haunted me for a while - it is on Troll Wall.

Ah yes - the worst journey in the world - "the trenches of Ypres were a comparative picnic".
Invaluable reading for a damp fortnight in the alps - listening to the rain on the tent and thinking "it's quite nice really"

Agree that the first-hand account in Apsley-Garrard's book is edge-of-the-seat riveting.
