I've never been to North Wales, but hopefully will get there sometime in the next year or two for some rock climbing, and maybe for a bit of winter climbing too.

The Rockfax North Wales Classics (http://www.rockfax.com/climbing-guides/books/north-wales-classics-2010/ ) guidebook looks suitable, but before I buy are there any alternative guides I should consider?

Mainly interested in rock routes VD-VS but would be a bonus if any of the following were included:
* easier routes/scrambles
* harder stuff up to E2 (we can all dream...or find a more able partner)
* winter routes (prob up to III or IV)

"North Wales Rock" looks like it could be an alternative; anyone tried both?

In reply to humptydumpty:

"Classics" is a small book, pocket sized and ideal to take on multi-pitch routes. Thus it is very much against the modern trend. The downside , of course, is that it has fewer routes, but if you're mainly interested in the 2* and 3* VD to VS, and are an occasional visitor, then it could be fine for you.

NW "Rock" and the competing Ground Up selective are much bigger books, too big, really, to take on multi-pitch routes (so you memorise the route, or photocopy the guide, or take a pic of it with a phone), but have many more routes.

Steve Ashton's out of print 100 Classic Climbs in North Wales is one of my favourite guides ever but it can be more expensive second-hand that the brand new guides. Even the diffs are written up as major adventures which really add to the anticipation and overall experience. Fans will also be interested in his guide to 100 Classic Climbs on Peak and Yorkshire gritstone and his scrambling guide to Snowdonia (still in print)

There is also an A5 Rockfax with more routes, Gogarth, North Wales limestone and mid-Wales in addition to the mountain crags, but it doesn't have the winter coverage as the smaller Classics guide does.
