Small tool kit

Went out yesterday with the family and had a few mechanical issues. The worst was the Mrs' rear wheel pulled across and was rubbing on the frame. Typical, as she only gets on her bike once a year and won't test ride it after I make any adjustments and just complains. Anyway - that's a different thread.

What would be the minimum tool kit to take on a long ride. What multi-tools are a decent purchase.

I'm thinking some tyre levers, a couple of Allen keys, box spanner, long nose pliers, puncture repair.

Small Multi tool that covers the bolts on your bike(s) - perhaps including a chain tool
Tyre levers
Spare tube and puncture repair kit
Pump

Spot on, especially the chain tool. The other things I carry are

A tyre boot in case you get a big split/puncture

A chain quicklink incase your chain breaks or you somehow buckle a link.

A safety pin! For getting puncture 'objects' out of your tyre or bodging a broken zip.

Is there a 'standard' multitool?

I've had a browse but don't see anything standard. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

Or rather they don't seem to have a spanner.

Not really. I've this one http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lezyne-rap-20-multitool-y8/ which covers most of what I'm likely to be wanting to do out on the road/trail.

As above: add a tyre boot (make your own out of a washed out and cut up toothpaste tube), a quicklink and a puncture repair kit and you are pretty well covered.

Thanks. That has an 8mm and a 10mm. I'll see if I need anything else and just buy a single spanner if needed.

This one is also good, I got it as a more comprehensive multitool for a touring trip but take it everywhere with me now, just in case!

all my biking is mtb, this is what I take which is basically a collection of stuff, you maybe able to consolidate some via a multi tool.

mini pump
puncture repair kit
spare tube
Allen key and screw driver multi tool
chain tool
a torx key that fits suspension pivot bolts etc
zips ties

I like the idea of the toothpaste tube tyre boot though!

Mountain biking:
Topeak Mini 18+ multi tool
Blackburn pump
Leatherman tool.
Spare rear mech hanger
A few assorted zip ties
10mm combi spanner if on old bike.
Schraeder valve tool for fork valves, after I once had a leaky valve.

Depending on who I'm out with, I've also taken a small adjustable spanner, decent tyre levers, chain lube, a few spare bolts and spare brake and gear inner cables - these have got me/us out of a few holes.

Road:
4 and 5mm Hex keys
Maybe a chain tool - Park mini chain brute.
CO2 pump + spare gas. On really long/remote rides, I'll take a normal pump.

Both:
Tyre boot (toothpaste tube)
Spare tube
Puncture kit
Chain quick link
Usually latex gloves for messing around with the chain.
