Harvest by Jim Crace...totally blown away by this.....hauntingly beautiful but be warned it's pretty bleak!
What shall I read next??

If you like bleak but beautifully written you could try The Road by Cormac McCarthy. But it is very bleak.
In reply to doz: I've just read, and thoroughly enjoyed, Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel. Very good, I thought; a plot that twists like a basket of snakes, so you're left to work out which character influenced which other when and still left wondering whether you'll have to draw it out on paper to be sure you've got it right.

You could do a lot worse than read more Jim Crace. Arcadia and The Pesthouse are my favourites.
 Tom Valentine 24 Oct 2015
In reply to tony:

Pesthouse is brilliant.
In the genre, I think it would have made a better film than The Road.

Have you read:

Cold Mountain (Charles Frazier)
Oscar & Lucinda (Peter Carey)
The Tenderness of Wolves (Stef Penney)

Heard an interesting interview of the author Marlon James on his new book about Bob Marley entitled A Brief History Of Seven Killings.
Sounds well worth a look however one fairly high-brow reviewer did comment that some of it "might not be for everyone".
Won the Man Booker Prize anyway.
