Hi all,

I have an old Canon EOS 40 D (2007) that keeps displaying Err 99 and won't take any pictures. I have tried cleaning the contacts with a new eraser as suggested, but no joy.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with their Canon, and if so how costly was it to fix?

Cheers, Matt

Only had it with an incompatible lens - old sigma one. Sorry.

My old 40D was notorious for Err99 - couldn't ever fix it except by flicking it off and then back on.

Cheers for the link, odd that I didn't come across it when trawling for solutions.

So far I have reformatted the memory card; switched the primary battery; cleaned the contacts and if course turned it on and off again.

As the camera was bought for the missus, who proceeded to not bother with it as the phone was more handy, we only have a single lens so unfortunately can't swap it with another one.

I have taken out the secondary battery (along with all the other bits now) and will come back yo it in a half hour or so.

May be worth mentioning that that the camera was taking about 4 picture before displaying the message previously, but now it displays it before anything is touched :/

No joy it is still displaying err 99, may just have to pay to have it fixed, cost me a fortune back in 07 and has barely seen the use it should have

Presume you've got the latest firmware installed.http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/news/eos_40d_firmware_111.do

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens? Does it happen at all zoom positions of the lens? (Try fully zoomed in / out / mid range.) Does switching to manual focus make any difference?

I had Err99 with my old 350D - eventually replaced it and gave it to a friend who found it worked OK with certain lens settings.

I wouldn't think so, I bought the missus the camera years back and as far as I know it's only ever been connected to a computer to upload pictures. I will check it out properly once i get home again.

Yes I have cleaned the contacts on both the lens and the body, but it is still showing err 99, no difference between AF and MF.

Unfortunately we only have the one lens so cannot try another either :/

In reply to Nordie_matt:

Certainly worth checking as I know they fixed a few Err 99 faults in some of the updates.

I have been trying to install it this evening, but the camera keeps showing Err 99 when connected to the laptop. It's incraesing looking like I need to take it in to a specialist . . .

Given they appear to sell from £125 that is unlikely to be worth it!

You should be able to copy the firmware onto a memory card and then install from the card, at least that's how I've done it in the past.

Also work your way through this list if you haven't already http://improvephotography.com/10372/error-99-canon-camera-fix-repair/

Not looking for resale value, but it cost me 8000 kroner about 8 years ago, so would just like it working really

Currently trying that now. I have went through the various stages of the linked page, but with no success

**Just installed the new firmware, unfortunately not the solution**
