No doubt been asked many mant times before but again -

Looking for advice on a European Alpine resort to go for one week in January February 2016. For two intermediate skiers - on / off piste - some touring. We ski Scotland but not abroad [recently]. Looking for best chance of good conditions and weather, cheap - as in flights and accomodation etc, flights from Scotland possibly. We are Alpinists and so can do glacier travel. Apres ski - not important [ we are hard men!]

Been to Cham in summmer many times - so maybe somewhere different. Wondering about The Dolomites [been there in summer -[spectacular?], Zermatt [ditto]? Not that keen on Austria or places like Andorra.

In reply to John Workman:

I like the Queyras, downhill resorts are not large but are 'real' villages & the touring can be very good, especially if you have a car to visit different valleys. A few huts as well.

in the Briancon area

puy st vincent voted cheapest resort in france a year or so ago (taken for metro france they looked at the medium sized resorts up) it is a small/medium resort with good piste and a fair bit off piste, tree skiing and you can drop out of resort into a side valley.

or serre Chevalier (this worked out the cheapest if you looked at € vers KM of piste same article) this is very big resort with some great off piste runs to suit every level.

you would need a hire car to make the most of touring but from both resorts you can easily access the Queyras area as mention above very good for touring, the Ecrins and the col du lautaret area this is a life time of touring to go at, and its not far to nip over to la grave off piste resort which is an amazing place.

for flights it easy to lyon, grenoble and closest turin?

accommodation if you have a car and dont need to be in resort you can make it cheaper, the french split their holidays over areas so their half terms last four weeks in feb to march add in the uk half term and this time is the most expensive.

I live in the vallouise valley 20 mins form briancon, if you would like any more info or help please get in touch rob@dream-trails.com

cheers Rob
