The son of a friend of a relative does this, he was in the Himalaya last year.

I briefly looked into this in the hope I could get Google to pay me to walk around in the hills.

I gather that they give the equipment (and maybe some funds in support) to people making interesting trips who apply to them, rather than just having an ongoing project - with salaried staff - to photograph everything on the planet.

It might also be worth mentioning that the camera pack weighs 18kg, apparently, not including lunch

So there is an open source alternative called Mapillary that anyone can create using a smart phone or GPS action camera type thing. I've used it for a variety of things, from kayaking, mountain biking, work related (I work in transport), humanitarian stuff etc. An example;

There are the obvious quality limitations and it lacks the 360 view (at the moment, but it's constantly evolving), but the flexibility (an extra 18kg strapped to my kayak?!) and ease of which you can do it are pretty good!
