I was thinking the other day, I probably haven't read any books in the last 2-3 years that would make it onto my Desert Island Books list. Like Desert Island discs you get 8 books (and a luxury).

Mine would Be

Shadow of the wind
1984
I am David
Lord of the rings (Complete version)
A Bear Called Paddington
To Kill a Mockingbird
An atlas of the world ( A good One)
Bleak House

And my Luxury - A toothbrush(hate having furry feeling teeth)

Hmmmm,

Lord of the Rings
The illustrated man
Mr midshipman easy
The worst journey in the world
The bridge
The mammoth book of 20th century science fiction (vol1&2)
kafka on the shore
the four adventures of Richard hannay

Luxury - a life time supply of Lagavulin

In reply to idiotproof (Buxton MC):

The Secret History - Donna Tartt
Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco
Invisible Cities - Italo Calvino
If This is a Man/The Truce - Primo Levi
The Periodic Table - Primo Levi
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova
Kidnapped - R.L. Stevenson
The Great Gatsby - F.Scott Fitzgerald

These aren't necessarily my favourites but out of my favourites, the ones that I think I'd happily re-read as many times as needed till I lose my marbles.

Luxury would be my Steyr field target air rifle with an endless supply of ammo so I could be the greatest air rifle shot in the world even though nobody else would know it.

Not read many of those.... will try and some more in 2016.

Never got the buzz about Gatsby

In reply to Mooncat:
The ability to read the book multiple times is key, I agree.

I'm pushing 25 or 30 runs through tLotR, but still find new things - says a lot about my reading style!

Lord of the Rings - Complete
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy - I've got a copy with all four of the trilogy, so extra volume there despite the fact the last three are a bit cack in comparison
The Origin of Species
1984
The Ascent of Rum Doodle - the only book that's ever made me laugh out loud
Shakespeare - I've never actually read vast amounts of his work, but with a lot of time to kill this would present an ideal opportunity. Needless to say it's quite highly rated...
Robinson Crusoe - partially (mostly)for the extreme irony

Luxury item: If the island is flat, running shoes. If it's craggy, rock shoes.

Hmm, a good question.

Luxury wouldddefinitely be a toothbrush.
Book wise I am not going to be all pretentious and list the must read classics. I am going to go for everyday books that I enjoy.

Lord of the rings.
Watership down
daughter of the empire
Enemy mine (first book I ever read for pleasure rather than education)
jingo
interesting times.
welkin weasels
warriors of mars

Don't forget you get the complete works of Shakespeare thrown in for free

Completely forgot about that rule, clearly it's been a while since I paid any attention to Desert Island Discs. In which ase I'd have to take The Lost World instead.

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog
Lord of the Rings (and Hobbit?!)
The Shipping News
Wolf Hall
The Wind in the Willows

A Wizard of Earthsea
Smileys People

Luxury: VIZ issues 1-6
In reply to Dr.S at work:

You can choose one other song to add on if you want

er, isn't that the same 'book'?

In reply to idiotproof (Buxton MC):

It would have to be a list of fairly popular entertainment for me, I can't read anything heavy on holiday - classics need a wingback by the fireside. My list would be:

Dune
The Brightonomicon
Angry White Pyjamas
Karate Do Kyohan
Small Gods
Godel, Escher & Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid
The Lotus Sutra
A Natural History of Latin

And my disc would be The Fruity Bits of Ivor Biggun.

In reply to Clarence:

maybe you all have more neolithic skills than me, but does nobody want some kind of 'how to survive on a desert island' book?

Apart from Robinson Crusoe.

And anything by Bear Grylls

I was in the Venture Scouts when The SAS Survival Handbook came out, the original one with the spear traps. I think I can probably recite it from memory...
In reply to Clarence:

The old rule was that your book and luxury couldnt be anything useful. Recently kylie took a Ray Mears book and sandy toksvic took a book of knots so i think the rules are slipping a bit
