Now that LR6 has been out 9 months or so what's the verdict on whether the upgrade from 5.7 is worthwhile? My Pc is a few years old - will it struggle with 6 if it's OK with 5.7? There were some posts just after the upgrade came out that mentioned difficulty sourcing LR6 as standalone rather than through the cloud; is this still the case as I definitely don't want to go down the CC route.

When I switched to LR6 from 5.x, it ran noticeably slower. I'm running an Intel Core 2Duo, 2.94GHz, with now 8Mb RAM (formerly 4Mb till quite recently). The extra RAM did make a slight difference, but not a huge amount. There was a decent thread on here at the time of the upgrade and I think the gist of it was if you have a fast processor, the upgrade did run LR faster.

The RAW pano facility which LR6 introduced is very good and works well and I think ChrisJD said he found the face recognition decent. There was also an HDR tool introduced but I don't know if it's good or not.

My personal Top Tip is to use the Lens Correction controls last of all, as that seems to slow down every subsequent command in LR!

Edit: you're right about the CC/standalone being discussed on that same thread. I went for the standalone but others preferred the PS/LR monthly licence. It was a bit of a convoluted process to buy LR outright, but it was doable then, so if it's still v.6 they're punting, I'd imagine it should still be available as such.

Edit 2:
Here's the upgrade purchase thread FYI:

Thanks, I'm running a 2.80GHz machine with 6Gb (not MB - are you really running 8MB RAM?) RAM. 5.7 runs ok so I might just stay where I am for now, and upgrade if I ever upgrade the PC (which might end up being a Mac, but that's a whole new thread)

Oops, sorry, yes 8Gb of RAM!

I'd say that if you don't need the 'Pano in RAW' facility (which I use quite frequently), or HDR & face recognition, I'd not bother, if it were me.

Still using Version 5 myself you can get the upgrade here https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_...

I have been tempted by the Pano and HDR and that you can save them as raw, upgrade is about £60.00 a lot of those who bought 6 were annoyed when when the cloud version got upgrades like Dehaze and the stanalone version didn't.
Some other companies do plugins claiming dehaze but have no knowledge as to how they compare to Lightrooms CC version. I will resist the cloud as long as possible myself.

anyone know if it's possible to go back to 5.7 if I try 6 and don't like it? I hopefully still have the 5.7 install.exe so at tleast in theory there should be no problem completely uninstalling LR then reinstalling LR5.7, but then presumably I'd have to recreate my catalog with all the keywording etc again, which I wouldn't relish...

In reply to Stone_donkey:
Download the LR6 Trial. Have a play, but don't upgrade your existing Catalog.

You'll need an Adobe ID.

You wont' need to uninstall LR 5,7

I use a Dehaze workaround on LR6 standalone - it does something worthwhile.

The Pano function has made LR6 a worthwhile upgrade for me (your experience may differ).

The way Adobe treats standalone verus CC users is pretty annoying.

Ive gone from Lr 3 to Lr6... Hardly a difference on the editing functions.

Victor Meldrew reviews LR!

I wouldn't be so pessimistic about it. There have been significant improvements and additions with each major LR release. I certainly wouldn't want to go back to LR3.

But don't take my word for it - nice summary here:

In reply to ChrisJD:

Agreed. I only used 3 a bit but I thought that 5 was much better when I bought it.

But I will resist CC as long as possible, so I hope I'll still qualify as a Meldrew.

In reply to ChrisJD: Have played about in past with local curves and contrast to dehaze in photoshop, there are some free plugins for Dehaze which appear to use some of the Lightroom Dehaze abilities as presets instead of brushes, though maybe that's what you meant by workaround.
