What options or methods are there for backing up SD cards while on holiday or away from home for a period of time?

Forgive the US site but I've seen people using these in remote places: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1061094-REG/nexto_di_nese_nd29011tb_n...

I shoot with dual cards (Canon DSLR) so have automatic redundancy there but if I was away for a while without that, I'd think about something like what I linked to.

In Summer 2014 I was travelling around Iceland for a couple of weeks and wanted to back up the SD cards every couple of days.

Having looked into the option I went with a Chromebook with a built in SD card reader and a couple of separate Flash Drives for the storage, similar to this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-cb3-111-11-6-c...

The SD card can plug into the Chromebook and then either save to internal memory or on to one or both flash drives, just in case. It worked out a little bit cheaper than a dedicated SD card backup device with the added bonus of being a light laptop with good battery life for accessing the internet, if probably slightly slower to back up each time

Similar to above poster. I bought a cheap refurbished Notebook (£80) and uploaded card data to that then copied to Flash Drive that I stored separately in luggage. So stuff was in three places - card, PC & flashdrive.
PS I chose this method as I could not rely on good internet to send to the cloud.

Is there a way to backup SD cards and cut a computer out of the chain?

It's too late for me... I got back from Iceland last thursday and my iPhone corrupted itself on Friday before I'd had a chance todeal with the photos... the most recent back-up point was the day before I left

Fortunately still got all my GoPro photos/footage but still... lost some great photos!

Do you mean copy to another SD (or other) card?

I bought something similar to this about 10 years ago from ebuyer (I think) but with out the picture viewing screen. It was called a data bank and accepted CF, SD etc and you could copy the card contents onto the internal hard drive. From what I can remember it was also very cheap as it was sold as a card reader without the HDD and you could buy an IDE hard drive to fit in it. I've just had a quick look on ebuyer and can't find anything similar anymore. Mine has now stopped reading the HDD but it use to be very good.

do you already have a tablet or half decent smartphone?

some (most) android phones feature something called USB on the go which with a cheap cable from amazon (or similar) and an SD card reader would allow you to copy the files (pictures) to either on board storage or the devices built in card slot, you then remove the SD card reader for your cameras card and plug in a USB flash drive and back them up to that.

(if that doesn't make sense, i'll try and explain again more clearly)

We took the card to a photo shop and copied them to a disc which we posted home, when we were in NZ.

This looks very useful.

This one is a lot cheaper: http://www.verbatim.com/prod/accessories/wireless-streaming/mediashare-wire...

Can anyone who understands this computer stuff tell me whether you can in fact download photos from an SD card to the thing and then later from the thing to a PC via a USB cable?
 ChrisNaylor 24 May 2016
In reply to Robert Durran:

That looks like it's purely for sharing between devices as opposed to downloading from the sd card until you upload it to your pc later.

I use the western digital one linked above at work and can't fault it for cleaning cards and storing data when out on a shoot if that helps

Thanks. When you say it cleans the card, does that mean the photos are deleted when transferred to the device. I want to keep the photos on the card so that I have 2 copies in different places as a backup - I don't mind carrying plenty of cards on a trip!

The ones I've got have an option to either transfer or copy, transfer cleans the card and copy does just that, takes a copy. They're worth every penny!

Depending how savvy you are there's always a DIY option: https://fstoppers.com/diy/do-it-yourself-three-sd-card-reader-plus-hard-dri...

Nexto DI. If it's good enough for us on high end feature films and TV drama shooting 4K slowmo, then it'll be fine for stills on an SD card!
