Morning...

Can anyone recommend a Peak District crag which is really close (easy walking distance) from a train station?

I'm based in Manchester and it would be good to have a go-to for last minute plans and after work quickies

Check out Castle Naze near Chapel en le Frith, Hobson Moor Quarry is easily doable with a train to Stalybridge then a bus or bike to the crag. Wimberry isn't too far from Greenfield, especially the bouldering.

Stanage isn't too far from Hathersage, and Frogatt isn't to far from Grindleford, but being over in the east they're probably best left for a weekend.

Maybe worth checking out some of the quarries to the north in Lancashire too.

If you're willing to throw in a very brief bus ride, the bus to Surprise View (from Hathersage) will land you right next to Millstone and Lawrencefield, and the Fox House stop (a stop or two further along) is very close to Burbage South.

IIRC you can see Hathersage station from Bamford I think?

In reply to Steve-J-E:

You can, but Bamford station itself is closer.

Ah that might be the one I was thinking of.
Did Dr. Beeching not get to the Peak?!

Lawrencefield is an easy walk through the woods from Grindleford

High Tor, Matlock Bath, couple of minutes walk, but not sure in the trains from Manchester

And the rest of the Chew valley, depends how long a walk you want. (o::

Not quite the Peak, but Helsby is excellent and a short walk from the station

Bamford seems reasonably walkable from Bamford station, though I've never tried it. If you could get away with taking a bike, everything will become a lot easier.

It's a right slog up the hill, I'm not sure a bike would make it easier. The way down would be fun though!

In the olden days we regularly went on the train to Froggatt, from Grindleford Station.
Returning in the dark was always a challenge, especially if we went via the Grouse.

You're about 100 yrs too late, Wharncliffe, Laddow, Black Rocks all popular in the 1890s due to easy access by rail. These days, New Mills Torrs or Buxworth Railway Crag or Cracken Edge Quarries

In reply to RyanOsborne:

Sorry, I meant in general - not specifically for Bamford!

Just to add to the choice, down from Matlock is Cromford. Willersley is a few minutes walk. You could get a bus towards Wirskworth and go to Black Rocks or Black Garden bouldering.
Have fun.
