Harold Lloyd, 3 kbWe all have that one friend who can just keep hanging on and will manage not to fall off no matter what you throw at them. Tonight's video is from 1923 and is an excerpt from stuntman Harold Lloyd's film Safety Last! Ok, it's not strictly 'climbing,' but we were impressed by the number of recognisable moves he managed to pull-off...

He's magic. Remember watching all his shows when they were aired at Tea time on BBC 2. Must have been the late 70's.

4:40 in, I know that feeling when you reach the top to find a horrible slopey topout.

I was about to say... It reminded me of the top of The Right Unconquerable (HVS 5a)!

I also remember that, it was on at 6 after Take Hart on BBC1 on Fridays

Pretty much the most realistic climbing I've seen in a movie. Nearly 100 years later, and Hollywood still never gets it right - Sylvester Stallone eat your heart out.

Remember watching them as a kid as well, absolutely brilliant/mental. Jackie Chan is another one to look up, not so much climbing but crazy stunts he did himself.

I love this, and like a lot of you remember it fondly from his films being shown on TV in the distant past.
Brilliant stuff, even though you know the height is illusion.

ah right, I wasn't sure how they did this

In reply to Michael Gordon:

They built a set for the clock scene on the roof of a tall building, by using an oblique camera angle they made it look way up. That said, the initial part of the scene shows him going up some 50 ft and that was for real.

Nice one. I was going to mention Jackie Chan as well; he was equally as good, if not better, at falling than climbing up!

Right Unconquerable I suspect, finding the top easy!
Best climbing film on UKC for years.
