Hey everyone,

me and my brother are planning to camp the walkers Haute route this summer (August 2016). Camping due to a lack of money, we may well have to eat at huts. So 2 questions:

1) we're both pretty fit; is it possible to complete the route in 9 days, and if not could we escape into a valley and catch a train if we wanted to finish early?

2) What food can we buy on the way (attempting to save even more money - getting as many expeds in as possibe!) - we'll be taking stoves.

Many thanks!

What route are you planning on walking? Chamonix is the cheapest place to buy food at the beginning of the trip, then there is a small shop in Trient and Champex then bigger ones in Verbier, after that it depends more on which valleys you come down into.

To be honest we haven't decided on a final route yet, it will probably be shortest possible with variations dependant on weather and provisions. Do any of the villages have some sort of supermarket type thing? We would prefer to keep weight as low as possible by buying food on the trail rather than stocking up at chamonix but obviously we may have to...

From memory after Chamonix there is nothing in Les Frasserands (there is a SuperU in Argentiere). There is a very small shop in Trient next to the Auberge Mont Blanc. Champex has a small supermarket on the lake. Verbier has a number of small supermarkets. After that you have to get to Les Hauderes before you find another shop, then Grimentz or Zinal both of which are taking you slightly away from the high route. Don't remember any shops in Gruben but a night in the hotel Schwarzhorn is always entertaining, next shops are in St Niklaus.
In reply to Joe.Foster:

9 days is no problem for anyone who is reasonably fit.
