Go for the L£Escursionista editions at 1:25k. Avoid the IGC ones

SLightly cheaper if bought in Italy.

I used Alpi Canavesane 08 MU Edizione 'Carta della Valle d'Orco' on a recent trip to the south side of the national park. Just walking, not climbing Gran Paradiso.

At 1:20,000 it's pretty detailed, and said by locals to be the best map of the area.

The particular sheet I had does cover GP, but only just. To the north, the sheet ends at the peaks of Petit Paradis which isn't much more than 1km north of the main peak. You get a lot more coverage of the southern approaches but there's enough of Valsaveranche to be useful - if that's where you're going in from. You get Refugi Vittorio Emanuelle, and the whole of the voie normale, which is marked as a path on the map (probably fair in summer - you can see the footprint trail on the glacier from miles away!)

Kompass maps are to be avoided.

The best maps for the French-Italian border areas by a long shot are the Carto-Guides ASF (Alpes sans Frontières) published by the French IGN

http://espaceloisirs.ign.fr/boutique/catalogsearch/result/?q=carto+guides+a...

It looks like N°14 Vanoise - Gran Paradiso is out of stock, but you may be able to find a copy on line.

Tabacco maps are good, but as far as I am aware they only do the Eastern Alps.

Next best for the Western alps is Istituto Geografico Centrale, which produces 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 maps, including one of the Gran Paradiso area.

Yes - I'm pretty sure you're right. Looks like it's only for the Dolomites (East of Brescia).
