What films would you recommend for me to either discover or catch up again with?

Got inspired by watching the first Underworld, last week for the first time in years.

The entire box set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A work of genius. Seriously.
Salem's Lot is on youtube, it was pretty good though I was about 15 when I last saw it.

Films on said theme wot made a lasting impression:
Cronos
Nosferatu (both the Max Schreck and Klaus Kinski versions)
The Hunger
Coppola's Dracula
Interview with a vampire
Shadow of the vampire with Willem Dafoe is meant to be good, haven't seen it.

For Zombie films you can't beat George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead.
I walked with a zombie by Jacques Tourneur is fantastic, very slow burning, as his his Curse of the Demon (or Night of the Demon, depending on whether it's the UK or US version).
Braindead by Peter Jackson is one of my favourite films ever and apparently is the goriest film ever made. Also one of the funniest.

I enjoyed The Mummy with Brendan Fraser.

Never really seen many werewolf films, was too scared when I was wee. The one with Benicio del Toro is fun.

Black Sheep. Kiwi film, about zombie vampire sheep. What's not to like.

In reply to The Lemming:
On the werewolf thing, have a look at Ginger Snaps.

Dog Soldiers is ok from what I remember.

In reply to The Lemming:

Not strictly a vampire film (being a series with a supporting vampire) nor widely available but Preacher has one of the best vampire characters ever.

More than okay, its a great film. Dark, grimy and very British humour.

It's an absolute classic.

Vampires:
Daybreakers
Interview with a vampire
Blade

Zombies:
28 Days Later
I am Legend
World War Z
Shaun of the Dead

Werewolves:
Not sure to be fair. Been a while.

In reply to The Lemming:

For zombies - any of the Romero films, shaun of the dead, zombie land, Bubba Ho Tep, Black Sheep.. or Dead Snow, or if you don't mind really silly try Zombibi/kill Zombie (a spanish? version of shaun of the dead... sort of)

For vampires - shadow of the vampire, any Christopher Lee ones, Blade, The Hunger, Interview with a vampire is still a good watch.

For werewolves - Dog Soldiers is awesome, American werewolf in London, don't bother with Benicio Del toro's Wolfman, instead try the original (1941) Wolfman with Lon Chaney, much more atmospheric. Also recommend 'The beast must die' and 'Legend of the werewolf' both starring Peter Cushing.

Actually thinking back, also try a film called Rec. Spanish language film but as long as you're ok with subtitles I thought it was bloody good.
cb294 09 Aug 2016
In reply to The Lemming:

Wolf (Jack Nicholson), both Nosferatu films (Schreck and Kinski), Let the Right One in (much better take on the whole teenage vampire genre than all the American TV series) and, of course,

The Curse of the Were Rabbit

Cockneys v zombies.

 Morty 09 Aug 2016

Zombies:
28 days later - its sequel isn't bad either.
The Walking Dead
Warm Bodies (Romeo and Juliet meets Romero)
Zombieland
REC
Life After Beth

I suspect the Lemming probably won't be too keen, but if we're going subtitled:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Vampire

Quality Hong Kong kung-fu vampire/zombie silliness.

What we do in the shadows is a great film (comedy), agree on Dog Soldiers as well.

Planet Terror is a brilliant (I think so...) sort-of zombie film

Based on this, I'd suggest you'd be more interested in bondage and rubberwear movies.

BBC series being human. Best thing BBC ever made imo. Can get dvd box set on amazon
 deepsoup 09 Aug 2016

And another BBC series, 'In The Flesh' - wonderfully original take on zombies.
 eltankos 09 Aug 2016

Can't believe no one has recommended "What we do in the shadows" yet, a comedy vampire flick, with occassional werewolves, very funny.

Don't bother with the American pulp werewolf stuff; they just made it up.

Got to throw another vote in for Dog Soldiers.
Zombie land is a good laugh.
John Carpenters vampires is okay too.
Dusk till dawn

In reply to The Lemming:

Vampires:
30 days of night is brilliant (it's sequel is most definitely not...)
Warm Bodies is an odd take on the genre

Zombies:
Zombieland every time.
Zombie Strippers is, as far as I am aware, the only one of it's genre...!

Going to have to find a copy of this now after recommending it. Sure I only saw it when it came out because I'd heard of Kevin McKidd(Tommy from Trainspotting and from a few miles down the road from where I grew up).

Dog Soldiers is ace. Sean Pertwee steals the show imho.

Another vote for this - the last scenes in the loft still return to haunt me from time to time.
 Bulls Crack 04 Sep 2016
In reply to The Lemming:

Zombies are just plain daft so Sean of the Dead was the last word on the genre. I understand Buffy et al have quite a following but US-based vampires fare is just ersatz imo.

Ok , not a film but a book 'The Twelve' by Justin Cronin is terrific (+ sequel)

What we do in the shadows - puts the whole po-faced vampire genre into perspective

In reply to The Lemming:

Had a quick look through don't think anyone has suggested them yet

Juan of the Dead - Cuban zombie apocalypse, great film
Zombeavers - Zombie beavers, don't expect oscar winning performances but entertaining, also an amazing theme song.

28 days later for real zombies :p

 GrantM 06 Sep 2016
In reply to The Lemming:

Near Dark
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Van Helsing - cheesy but fun if you remember the old RKO movies
