Shifter/derailleur compatibility

I've just acquired an elderly but VGC Specialised Rockhopper (probably mid- to late-90s vintage) for my 12 yr old who has grown out of his 24 inch wheel 'yoof' bike. The front shifter is shagged, and I've been looking at cheap basic shifters to replace it. SRAM gripshifts say they are compatible with Shimano derailleurs if the actuation ratio is 1:1 http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sram-30-3-speed-comp-twist-shifter-front/ Does anyone know if late 90s Alivio front derailleur is 1:1?
