Does anyone know of any sites / knowledge that detail / reference the human activity that must have taken place before they become the pleasure grounds for climbing?

Most if not all have had quarrying taken place and a lot must have been human settlements against the walls with the number of post holds cut into areas.

Anybody?

In reply to robert-hutton: The old guide books have loads of history and all that about how they were formed, not sure about the new ones - Black Rocks is interesting...

In reply to robert-hutton:

I think Gordon Stainforth's book The Peak - Past and Present may help, great photography too.
