Winter glove recommendations?

I'm looking for some winter mitts. I usually wear some old waterproof ski gloves with wool gloves underneath and that's worked okay for me down to around zero.

Do you think these North Ridge Waterproof Winter Gloves would be a cost effective upgrade?

Anyone used them? I was thinking of getting a large so I could wear another thin pair underneath.

I'm running on a budget, so don't want to be spending too much on gloves that are only used 1 week a year. I would be hoping to use them with my ice axe though.

Any help and advice would be great.

Depends what you want to do. For winter walking probably fine. If climbing, ropes etc are involved, you'd better get gloves - it's a pain to open a krab with a mitt.
I managed to get a really cheap, but excellent pair of gloves from Decathlon....worth a check.
To save money: better buy two cheap pairs of ski gloves (TK Maxx, Decathlon, whatever), drench them beforehand in silicon spray, and change them half way if the first pair gets soaked. And get a few metres of thin shock cord from B&Q, then you can make nice loops, so you never lose them anymore....

Don't have those but I did buy these as a pair of backup/spare mitts for winter walking/climbing and snowboarding. They're super warm.

Not mitts but I used Simond Cascade gloves last winter - they're great value. Got a pair of Montane mitts in the pack for emegencies but they didn't get used, not sure how long they would last with an axe.

I've got a pair of the Mountain Equipment Guide gloves and they're brilliant, really robust and warm. It's worth pointing out though that despite company's best efforts it's pretty much impossible to make a glove properly waterproof!

Also, almost everyone I know and every guide I've ever seen has a pair of those tan leather Simond gloves, they seem really bombproof and they're a good price too, and as we all know if guides wear them it automatically makes them really cool
