This was excellent. The last surviving member of that expedition.

The wonder of the V box....despite the fact I missed it in the listings it had recorded this show based on my past preferences. Well worth a watch.
.. intelligent, sensitive and unashamedly bookish.

I found the sections where Jan was interviewed in the seventies about her gender reassignment very compelling tv , what incredible strength of character. I have read a couple of the travel books in the past but will be looking out for more .

I'm a great Morris fan and have most of her stuff. It's all great, but my favourites are the Pax Britannica books, the British Empire trilogy she wrote while still James Morris. Apologist for empire h/she occasionally might be, but there's no denying the sweep of the books and their immensely satisfying --visceral, even -- evocation of those far-off times. That said, a close second is her book on Admiral Jacky Fisher, Fisher's Face, her love affair at distance with that extraordinary sailor.
