How many brits have climbed 9a?

I can think of about 10. Wondering how many local heroes are hiding under the radar.
Guessing must be about the 15-20 mark all together.

That adds Steve Dunning then. If it's really 9a...

And what was best John Dunne managed? Was Total Eclipse suggested as 9a?

Unless Rainshadow has been downgraded I'm pretty sure Will Bosi gets on the list...

Multiple 9as now, yes.

That list had a "in the last 5 years" criteria attached to it at the time of writing, and as the rest of this thread shows, has been put out of date in no time at all - who'd thought a lanky punter with penchant for dressing in rubber and gaffer tape would get multiple entries!?!

Yep. Oops. I must have missed him when I cut and pasted the list across.

Not to mention he often shaves body parts that don't usually get shaved...

According to this list there are 22. This lists the "voie 9a" and includes boulder link ups, including ascents in the very exotic sounding "Grotte de Parisella" and the Stamina Power Link at Raven Tor. The list also includes 8c+/9a routes, and I wouldn't know if they count or not.

Century Crack was 14b or 8c...

They reckon Crucifix Crack will by 9a+ but of course they have to do it first.

In reply to TonyB:

And removing the slash grades and boulder link ups I count 15 plus Rich Simpson.

I seem to recall Escalatermasters being downgraded to 8c+ a few years back...

So 14 then... (not far off the initial estimate)

Steve Mac (7)
Tom Bolger (7)
Alex Barrows
Ben Moon
James McHaffie
John Dunne
John Gaskins
Jordan Buys
Malcolm Smith
Neil Carson
Ryan Pasquil ? (not listed on French site)
Stevie Haston
Stu Littlefair
William Bosi

+ Rich Simpson who has claimed 2

...depending on whether Hubble is or isn't
 stp 21 Oct 2016
In reply to GrahamD:
Well I discounted slash grade routes which Hubble gets in that French list.

But it's a good point since some of the other routes might well be more dodgy - Era Vella for one, which Jonathon Seigrist thought was more like 8c and has had far more ascents than any other 9a. Total Eclipse would be another since the grade is suggested only by John Dunne who hasn't done anything else of that grade, so very much unconfirmed.

Is it only Alex Megos who suggested (or rather implied) Hubble wasn't so hard since it was upgraded? If so maybe that should seen as an anomaly, something that suited him. And didn't Hubble take him slightly longer than Action Directe anyway (the supposed benchmark 9a)?

Didn't Ondra say 8c+/9a for Total Eclipse?

I think so. But it was wet, so he wasn't sure.

Apparently Jungle Speed got downgraded to 8c+ which is why he isn't listed on the French site.

 stp 22 Oct 2016

Dave MacLeod's has done 3 but all get slash grades (8c+/9a).

Stevie Haston has done Hugh which is still listed as full 9a - though only had 3 other repeats.

I know, just displaying my heavy Bradford bias.
