> It depends entirely upon which Lumix you're talking about and it's age. The Canon 350D is very old tech now, but will still take a decent picture in the right hands. If the Lumix is of the same age then I'd go for the dSLR but if it's newer then sensor and lens technology may gave it the edge.

I have a 350D and would agree with this. I've compared side by side shots of the same Himalayan landscape scene with my Canon S100 and the latter is clearly better. So a 16MP Lumix of the last five years I would expect to be noticeably better than the 350D.
