Will a canon 350d outshoot a 16mp lumix?

I've seen some great and some terrible mountain photos taken with both, which one for the hassle of taking around with you, would you rather take a photo with and are there any other cheap options?

You can have all the megapixels in the world and still take a piss poor picture.

It depends entirely upon which Lumix you're talking about and it's age. The Canon 350D is very old tech now, but will still take a decent picture in the right hands. If the Lumix is of the same age then I'd go for the dSLR but if it's newer then sensor and lens technology may gave it the edge.

Wonder if there is a feature where you can search through the galleries by selecting a brand of camera or model rather than the person who took the photos?

+1

I have a 350D and would agree with this. I've compared side by side shots of the same Himalayan landscape scene with my Canon S100 and the latter is clearly better. So a 16MP Lumix of the last five years I would expect to be noticeably better than the 350D.

You should be able to download the original res ones, tho note that it's more than likely the person who's uploaded has tweaked clarity, changed levels etc.

If you want to compare the raw output from the camera have a look at DPReviews website - you can find the original review of the camera there:

Canon - https://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/cameras?subcategoryId=cameras
Panasonic - https://www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/cameras?subcategoryId=cameras

Note that the 350d is a DSLR camera and has interchangable lenses. The lens is by far the largest determinant of the (technical) image quality assuming you're not shooting in low light/high ISO. I used to have a 350d and it took very good photos with my 70-200mm F4L lenses - you'll certainly not beat that lens on a compact camera of equal resolution - where it gets murkier is if you double the resolution of the compact you will probably be able to pull more detail out of the scene, tho the bokeh (background fuzzyness no idea how to spell it) will still be much better on the canon (assuming the same aperture) simply due to it's larger sensor size.
