Been watching the mini series on ITV about Peter Manuel who committed a number of murders in the mid to late fifties.

Apparently he conducted his own defence not only at an earlier trial at which he was acquitted but also his eventual murder trial. Reading about it this morning it seems that he very nearly got himself acquitted at that trial as well.

According to the tv series he was every bit a psychopath playing mind games with his victims and the police.

I can't help wondering that he must have had a high level of intelligence to have even contemplated conducting his own defence and getting acquitted at the first trial and very nearly so at the second.

I remember him being hanged. The word "psychopath" wasn't one you heard used at the time - I'm not sure it had even been coined. He was just a murderer.
