I'm looking for recommendations for an Alpine instructional book as a present for someone who has done a little bit of Alpine climbing but has so far always followed more experienced climbers.

Alpine Mountaineering by Bruce Goodled is very good and meets your requirements

It's Bruce Goodlad. Great book.

Is Peter Cliff, an Introduction to Alpinism, still in print/recommended? I like it!
In reply to Martin Haworth:
Thank you for the replies, I was thinking of getting the Bruce Goodlad book, so it's good that the recommendations confirm it is a good one to get.

As far as I can tell, Peter Cliff's book is still in print.

They are very different books, but they are both great. I feel they complement each other. If I had to choose just one I'd go for the Goodlad book. Cliff's book is small, quick to read and quite cheap so both may be an option.
