> Singer George Michael has died aged 53, his publicist has said.

> The star, who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home". Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

I worked with a music industry insider (topping up his income in a boring office job) back in the 80s. Already then George was thought to be one of the nicest men you could hope to meet. I wasn't a big fan but Wham certainly made an impact on my youth. He obviously has his demons and suffered for his infractions, but I always found him rather dignified in the face of a heartless media. It sounds as though his final days reflected those qualities of kindness and dignity.

I wasn't a fan of his but I found your tribute to be moving.

What a terrible year it's been to the music world, including the tragedy to the Red Army Choir on the same day

you might say it is the most real year as well.
Death is a part of life.
change is as well, even if we do not like the change (a certain Donald duck)
or 'prexit' (post ...etc.. yawn , depending on your views)

Good advice if you have as much talent as he had.
His music was after my time. Rip nonetheless. What a year.!

I have a couple that I enjoyed watching in the 70's in mind that are poorly.
( but I would not like to jinx them, and it would be a shame for them to go in an already crowded year- hang in there lads)

Someone on R2 this morning told a story of a lady on Deal or no Deal who when asked by Noel what a good amount to win would be replied 15k so her and the husband could afford IVF. The lady then went on and lost but George Michael contacted the show and gave her the 15k.

My wife and I were among the 2000 nurses who were lucky enough to get tickets for the free concert he gave at the Camden Roundhouse.

None of us can ever really 'know' such celebrities, but standing only 10 feet from the stage, he seemed genuinely to feel deeply about the hard work that we all did, and the NHS in general.

It was a fantastic night, and we all felt so appreciated.

There's something wonderful about seeing a big star in a small venue. And when he's doing it for you m, rather than for financial gain, that must have felt really special.
