Is anyone familiar with this? Trying to get by train from Amsterdam to Cologne with a standard road bike. Thanks.

This gives some info for Dutch trains (easy, just get an extra ticket) and ICE International which runs between Amsterdam (not as easy).

Within Germany it seems that you need to buy a special ticket as well, but it's not that clear:

Good luck!

Another option always worth considering is going to a local bikeshop in Amsterdam and asking for a cardboard box for the journey... then no ticket required but makes gettig connections a bit more hassle

When we cycled down the Danube I bought tickets to get us from Paris to the start over the phone with Deutsche Bahn. They were super efficient and clued in as one may expect from the Germans. Tickets arrived in the post with two that had to be attached to the bikes .... n packing needed. There are possibly no bikes on the ICE trains ie. equivalent of TGV. Good luck.

The DB planner at bahn.hafas.de has an option to select only bike-friendly journeys - if you do it suggests you take the IC-Berlin (total cost around EUR16 on top of your ticket - EUR12 for bike ticket, EUR4 for reservation) and change at Rheine. Bikes, other than encased folding bikes, aren't allowed on ICEs.

Might be worth you giving one of the agencies e.g. Ffestiniog Travel or Rail Canterbury a call, for a few quid they can probably sort it all out for you.
