It's a sometimes used technique for fighting bush fire. You do a controlled burn of the bush downwind of the wild fire, so that when the uncontrolled fire reaches it there is nothing left to catch fire and it dies.
Are you implying that Trumps foreign policy is likely to be based on a scorched earth policy for all near neighbours, creating a fire break around the USA. Will he see the UK as a buffer between them and that hot bed of radicalism (not to mention foreigners) that is Europe?
