Anyone know of anything on Youtube showing what happen to a metal rod when a surrounding coil of wire is electrified.

Just trying to explain electromagnetism to a youngster

I just found a load of videos by googling 'electromagnetism, coil and rod'
A search for Faraday's law works too

This shows the opposite effect - generating current by a magnet in a tube. http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/z4y2hyc see 1'15" in.
It is part of a BBC series that covers Electricity.

Why not experiment yourselves, with a 6 inch nail, a bit of wire and a battery?

A good one to try is to get some thin enamelled wire (about 6 ft) and coil it around a large pen. Remove & secure to stop it all falling apart. Remove the enamel from one side of the wire (same both sides) and support on two arms made of paperclips attached to a battery. Put a magnet underneath and spin the suspended coil.
With a bit of luck (and patience) you get a spinning coil!
Worth googling to see how its done but easy once understood.

...and then dig out a copy of Leonard de Vries' Book of Experiments.
