The Mrs is travelling south later this year, whilst I am planning to be away. She has arthritic shoulders and needs to get across London with a suitcase. A black cab would be ok between stations but she still needs to negotiate getting off and on the trains and through the stations to/from the cab rank. Any suggestions please(NOT a baggage trolley, preferebly bona fide human assistance)

Courier/parcel the suitcase to her destination.

Btw, did you get your passport sorted?

Get in touch with each station, they are duty bound to assist.

In particular, we would recommend that you book assistance if you:
• Have a mobility or other disability that means you find getting on and off trains difficult;

Avoiding London might be one option - there are routes that allow you to change at stations elsewhere much more easily.

Do these preclude the use of a rucksack? If not it's much easier to negotiate escalators etc. than with a suitcase.

Travel via Reading and avoid London as much as you can?

My Mum and MIL , both elderly, have recently travelled from Carlisle to London by train.

On both occasions we contacted Virgin rail who were EXCELLENT at ensuring they had assistance at both ends of their journeys.

Thanks. Do you know if that included loading and off-loading luggage?

If she speaks to the guards on the platforms before getting on the trains, they will assist getting on and have a word with the guard about help getting off. Avoid the tube in rush hour. St Pancras services kent by high speed (approx costs a tenner more), is across the road from kings cross and half a mile from euston. Other station transfers are a bit more difficult. Avoid trains that are going to be inside the m25 before 0900 and between 1600 and 1830. Try to get to the london station at the start of the line and ten mins early as you will get a seat without the guards having to kick someone out of theirs.

Where are you going from and to?

As above - which stations in London an dtravelling from where to where. Thameslink might be an option if the stars align.
