I uninstalled my ancient ( circa 1999) copy of Photoshop, to free up space on my C drive, with the intention of reinstalling it on my D drive. Unfortunately my computer will not run the setup from the CD - even though all of the files seem to be there. Can anyone suggest a good equivalent free software that I can safely download.

Old versions are now free to use.

The best open source equivalent is GIMP

Ta very much -- works a treat. I've now got a more modern version (CS2) than the one that didn't load Photoshop 6 -- and it seems to work fine on my Win7 machine -- Adobe site says there are issues when running it with Win 10 so I'm glad I've not got a 'new' operating system.

As Dan said, GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) is the free equivalent, and it's very good.
