Are there any ophthalmologists here?

I saw my consultant today and he wants to see me again in three months to see whether I need to have a Trabeculectomy.

I'd be keen to know, assuming he decides I need the op, how soon it's likely to be done. Ideally I'd prefer to wait until after my TMB trip otherwise I'm worried that might go out of the window.

I would think the only person who can answer that is your consultant. I'm just an optometrist I'm afraid, but clearly this isn't an emergency (guessing you are on drops that aren't working?) so it'll all be down to how they manage cases like yours at your hospital.

I would expect that if you don't want the surgery now/in 3 months, they can try other options to try to get the pressure down assuming that you've not already gone through every combination of drugs already? UKC is great for life advice, but I think this one may prove a bit too specialist! Even if you can't get to talk to the consultant, someone else in the department may be able to advise a bit better than me.

Thanks for the reply. I was just trying to get some feel for the possible timescale. I'm sure you appreciate that, if it needs to be done I would prefer not to have all the hospital visits, ops and general disruption together with the chance of not being able to go on the TMB whilst I'm preparing and getting ready for a trip.
He did say today that the appointment three months hence is to enable him to assess whether I do in fact need the op.
Thanks again

Too little info.

What are the pressures; have they deteriorated; by how much; what drops have been tried and how long did they work; etc...

However, more helpfully (I hope):
- elective surgery is on an 18 week pathway unless there's other urgency
- risk of going blind is pretty urgent (and trumps - or should - any trip you have planned/paid for)
- however if it's been steady gradual progression you may be able to safely delay a few weeks
- it's a minor op in the scheme of things; recovery should be fast and the no fly time minimal.

If your visit to Cham is August you should be fine.

In which case you have no worries - slow progression assessment plus a wait time for the op will easily put it into the autumn. Relax

I've been told that they are "good", "fine", "ok"

Sounds like they aren't an immediate issue. Did your drops change - are you on a combination product?

On two lots.

The chap I saw yesterday may have assumed I was going on a bog standard beach/resort hol. I'm going to contact the senior consultant on Monday and explain about my trip.
Thanks for your advice.

Emailed the consultant on Monday but I'm now on pins waiting for a reply.
