Anyone tried one? I know Versa Climbers are well regarded but obviously a lot more expensive

What are you trying to train? A ladder would be cheaper.

Cardio and strength endurance for mountaineering. Not expecting it to improve my campusing (in)ability...

Would Maxi or similar training be a bit one dimensional? The mountaineers I know lift weights, climb easy indoor walls with rucksacks full of books and spend hours on the treadmill set to steep incline (again with weights).

Yes, tried one once. They don't have adjustable resistance, and the resistance they come with have is minimal-to-nonexistent. So it's hard to make it any more strenuous than a walk. Also they're super-flimsy.

Worth keeping an eye on eBay, though -- they often have used Versaclimbers, and sometimes knockoffs of the Versaclimber (with adjustable resistance) will show up even more cheaply.

Hmmm, sounds like an advert to me... registered yesterday, only one post, "360" in both username and web address....
