Hi,
I'm an experienced walker but have never done anything in the Alps. I'm planning on tackling the Haute Route this summer and have some flexibility about when to walk it. I'll be carrying a shelter which I plan on using most of the time, but I want to go light, wearing trail shoes rather than boots. A few questions:-
When is the best weather?
Does it get uncomfortably crowded in peak season (presumably mid July-mid August?)
What is the cheapest way of getting from Zermatt to Geneva airport?
Any other tips?
Any must read blogs?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
Mike

If you're camping then busyness is less of an issue. I biked parts of it in July a few years ago and can't say it seemed any busier than other alpine trails.

Weather is just luck of the draw.

This blog is nice: http://www.mywalkingworld.com/cz1.htm

I would imagine the trains will work out the best, the SBB website will tell you everything you need to know, its saying prices from 51 CHF at the moment

We did Chamonix to Zermatt and retuned to Geneva via train very straightforward, we did it early July and in places the snow was still quite deep and very icy as we was running ot it felt quite serious and very winterery at times.

Thanks for these comments. I've decided to set off on19th July so hopefully the ground will be more clear.
