My google skills are failing me, and hopefully the photographers of UKC can help....

I'm looking for an external hard drive sort of device that whilst functioning as an external hdd also has the ability to automatically suck up video and photo files direct from SD cards whilst in the field (and without a laptop in between)

Does such a device exist?

They used to, e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperDrive-ColorSpace-UDMA-II-Wireless/dp/B009086G... but since it is now relatively easy to copy direct to tablets (both Apple and Android) the market for them has all but evaporated.
Personally I just carry multiple cards and swap them on a regular basis so that I'm not putting all eggs in one basket.

Edit.

It's a bigger getting links for a tablet. Anyway, the device is a gnarbox.

Western digital do storage with sd card readers built in if that is what your after? - https://www.wdc.com/en-gb/products/portable-storage/my-passport-wireless.ht...
And say a WD 1 TB My Passport Wireless Wi-Fi Portable External Hard Drive seem to be still available to buy in the U.K. from Amazon for example which has both wifi and sd card reader built in.

SD cards can also come with built in wifi to allow transfer to other devices direct say a standalone HDD drive with wifi (not cheap though so depends on your budget).

I have a previous model of Nexto M1 http://www.nextodi.com/product/M1_en.html which is great. You just put in the media card and it incrementally copies/moves the data. The new ones looks more expensive though

Be careful with the bundled WD backup software - If you delete something off your machine it deletes it off the backup as well .
